Gig Review – Attila & The Honeys and The Havoc Vultures

The night was young and we were excited, our dancing shoes were freshly polished and there was glitter on our faces. Tonight we were going to boogie. We piled into the car, a tad late after a certain member of our party demanded food, and started the search for the elusive 88Lounge in Norwood. This was the venue of the much anticipated gig we were going to see, featuring Attila & The Honeys, The Havoc Vultures and Desmond & The Tutus.

All these bands are all relatively new on the music scene, not that this has affected their popularity. Each of them collect devotees like a farm dog collects fleas!

Before the bands started playing we decided to have a look around and mingle (and by mingle I mean sit down for a bit and look at the people). This was the sort of event that welcomed just about everyone, you could really be yourself. Dress in neon orange and people would look at you like you started the next big thing. Fantastic!

First up were Attila & The Honeys, now that’s a name that sticks in my mind! This is a band that can really entertain a crowd, and their music isn’t half bad either! They have the perfect mix of dancey songs, like “Tick-Tock”, to get the crowd excited with a few sweet ballads, like my favourite, “Special Underpants”, in between for something different. The band consists of six members that have come together, and I can only guess, through the fact that they are direct descendants of the mighty Attila the Hun. Considering their mutual ancestor was known as “The Scourge of God”, it is quite reassuring to know that The Honeys have no desire to rape and pillage, and that they would rather spend their days making sweet, sweet music for us to dance to.

Next were The Havoc Vultures, and where The Honeys lacked some harder tunes for the rockers in the crowd, The Vultures made up for with their psychedelic rock which makes me think of Led Zeppelin, but is still distinctly their own. They got the crowd all riled up, and there were even a few half-hearted attempts at moshing (luckily with not much success, there wasn’t that much space…).

Unfortunately, since fate is a cruel mistress, we were unable to see the magnificent Desmond & The Tutus. Luckily for us, we are a positive bunch and didn’t let this get us down. We had danced and mingled (with real people!) all night so we were happy, though tired. We saw two awesome bands, and I think you should go see them too. They’re well worth the entrance fee you’ll have to pay!
